HOW IT ALL WORKED

Inside a Nike Missile Site: How It All Worked

A Nike missile site was more than just missiles—it was a fully functioning military installation.

Missiles didn’t arrive ready to launch. Instead, they were delivered in parts and assembled on-site in the Missile Assembly and Test Building.

Here, crews:

  • Installed fins and control surfaces
  • Tested hydraulic and propulsion systems
  • Checked for leaks and mechanical issues

Nearby, the warhead area was separated for safety, surrounded by protective earth berms to contain potential explosions.

Security was also a major priority.

Guard dogs and patrol units protected the site 24/7, with designated kennel and training areas built into the base.

Every piece of the site—from buildings to pathways—was designed for efficiency, safety, and rapid response.

What may look like open land today was once a carefully engineered system, where every movement had purpose.
